Introducing Geoff
Sculptor Geoff Bromilow was born at sea, on a British ship in the Indian Ocean. His family was leaving Australia temporarily, heading over to the UK. In 1955, travel by ocean liner was the way most folk travelled long distances.
No-one seems able or willing to reveal the truth of the matter. Perhaps Bromilow simply burst forth early because his mum suffered terrible sea sickness. Who knows? Geoff now lives near the coast and the sea has been a touchstone in his life from his childhood. He grew up in Brighton in South Australia, after returning from the UK at two years old. He spent many days on Brighton beach with his parents and two siblings. Perhaps his most treasured memory is of collecting driftwood on the beach with his mother Marjorie – a master of the Sogestu School of Ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arranging, which fosters asymmetry). Marjorie was a teacher of Ikebana along with her many other occupations. It is her creative stamp that shaped the careers of all her three sons – each of whom has made a life in the arts.
